My Top 5 runDisney Tips!

Happy Monday, friends! I hope you all had a great weekend filled with waffles and magic! I am getting all of my ideas together for my next runDisney event costumes and I thought it would be fun to talk about my top five runDisney tips! I get so many questions on Instagram about runDisney so I thought it would be fun to give some major tips and tricks to these massive events! I just ran my 20th runDisney race at Princess Half Marathon Weekend and I'm getting ready for races 21-24 at Star Wars Dark Side Half Marathon Weekend, so you could say I've definitely picked up a few tricks along the way.

1. Register EARLY

The one question I get asked about most is about registration! You can find all of the dates for registration on the official runDisney website. Each race sells out very quickly, and it's a good idea to be on your computer when registration opens, which is usually at 12:00 pm EST. If you're an annual pass holder or Disney Vacation Club Member, you can register a few days early, and those dates are available on the AP and DVC websites.

Before you register be sure to be logged into your Active account, if you don't have one make one in advance. This is the third-party website runDisney does all of their race registrations through. Your check-our process will go faster if you're logged in. Just because you're in the virtual queue doesn't guarantee you a spot for the race. Registration is like the Hunger Games, so be sure to have all of your passwords and credit card information ready. If you're registering more than one person over 18, you're going to need all of their information, as well as making them a separate Active account. For example, I always register my dad, who doesn't have a personal email account, so I use my work email for his Active account.

2. Wear a Costume

Part of the fun of running a runDisney event is that they are all themed differently, and that allows for a lot of creativity when it comes to costumes! The races runDisney currently has at Walt Disney World are (as of March 2018), are Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend (all Disney characters), Princess Half Marathon Weekend (princess themed), Star Wars Dark Side Half Marathon Weekend (Star Wars villains), Wine and Dine Half Marathon Weekend (has changed themes the past two races, but is usually a movie based around food, like Ratatouille or Beauty and the Beast- think Be Our Guest.)

If you're like me and don't always want to go with the theme, or want to do something that is completely unexpected, Wine and Dine is the perfect race for that! I was Thor last year for that race and it was so fun running as a Marvel character. For Star Wars a lot of people tend to do character mash-ups, like Boba Fett, but as a princess- like Belle Fett, or Ariel-Fett, and those are always really fun! One of the best places to look for costume ideas is Pinterest and the hashtag for each race on Instagram.

3. Stay at a Walt Disney World Resort

If it's within your budget I would highly recommend staying at a Walt Disney World resort for your race trip. There are complimentary shuttles to and from the expo and races, along with Disney transportation to and from the parks. If you book early you can get some decent deals on rooms as well. The complimentary shuttles alone are worth their weight in gold when you're getting up at 3:00 AM to run, and after finishing a half marathon.

4. Don't be Overwhelmed

It's really easy to be overwhelmed at a runDisney event, whether it's your first one or your 100th one! But my top tip here is to make a plan. Know what parks you're going to on what day, know what dining reservations you've made (you're going to want to make those well in advance), and know that the parks are going to be a little more crowded than normal. Also know that if your well made plans don't work out exactly how you thought they would, that it's okay! Even Disney magic can't stop a ride from breaking down every once in a while and you having to switch things around a bit.

My TOP TIP is to have fun! These races are really some of the funnest weekends I have at the parks and I look forward to them every year as they get closer. There is an endless amount of fun to be had at Walt Disney World, and what's better than walking around the parks with a GIANT medal around your neck and everyone congratulating you for waking up at 3:00 AM that morning?!
