A Day In The Life...
Hello, friends! As many of you know, or if you're new here at MWM (Hey, how's it going? I'm Megan! Thanks for stopping by!), I'm self-employed and work from home. Sometimes I get questions about what I do all day at home, and what it's like being self-employed instead of actually getting dressed to "go to work" every day. Well this should clear some things up.
Wake up: 7:30-7:45 AM.
I usually wake up pretty early for someone who doesn't leave home for work. I wake up anywhere between 7:30 and 7:45 in the morning. Why? Because I'm most creative in the morning, and I like that stillness and quiet of the morning.
Bible Study and Social Media Check: 7:45-8:30 AM.
The first thing I do when I wake up is let my dog out, and turn the kettle on to boil hot water. This takes about 3 minutes and is rolled into this Bible study and social media time. I use a French press every morning for coffee, and typically drink out of a Disney coffee mug, because I love Disney. I get my Bible and journal and read a chapter a day. Right now I'm reading through 2 Timothy, which is super encouraging. This is my time before the day gets crazy with emails and Etsy orders where I can just focus and spend time with God. When I finish my Bible study, I check Instagram and Twitter on my phone. On Twitter I tend to just catch up on what happened while I was sleeping. Then on Instagram I check my personal Instagram and reply to any comments or like the random picture from Lou Teasdale. On the Instagram I use for my Etsy, I usually have a few more things to do, like reply to DMs, comments, check new followers to make sure they aren't spam accounts, then I post a picture every morning. The picture is either something from Disney, or something I want to promote from my Etsy shop.
Check Emails and Etsy Orders: 8:30-8:45 AM
This takes about 15 minutes and I do it on my laptop at my desk. I find that answering emails on my phone causes a lot of typos and I don't like that. Then on Etsy, I'm able to update my spreadsheet that's on my computer at the same time.
Any Other Social Media Checks: 8:45-9:15 AM
My other social accounts, like Facebook and Pinterest are checked on my laptop. Then I scroll through Buzzfeed because why not take a quiz about what type of french fry you are before breakfast? This is also when I watch any YouTube videos that are in my Subscriptions box, from beauty videos like Lisa Eldridge and Pixiwoos, or last nights late night shows like Jimmy Fallon or James Corden.
Work on Blogging Ahead: 9:15-10:30 AM
Sometimes life gets in the way of blogging, so I try to blog ahead a few days. So for a little more than an hour every day I try to write something. Whether it get's completed or not is a totally different story.
This is also the time that if I need too, I would run to the post office to drop off orders.
Breakfast: 10:30-10:45 AM
Usually by this point I'm pretty hungry, because I've been up since 7:30 and had three cups of coffee. Yeah, I said three. Judge me all you want. I'm pretty sure my blood is made of coffee now. So I leave my desk and head out to the kitchen to grab something to eat. Typically, I make my specialty of cereal. But some days I get ambitious and make a smoothie that I can just take back to my desk. Those happen on really busy days.
Beauty Advisor Writing: 10:45 AM -1:30 PM
I write for a site called Beauty Advisor, which is launching very soon! (I'll let you all know more about a date for launch when I know!) So I've been working on getting as much of my writing for them done as I can. Some of the articles take quite a bit of research, so I tend to get lost in that and forget that I need to eat lunch, then BAM it's 1:30 and I'm hungry, again. I save my work, where ever I may be, and grab some food. Usually leftovers from dinner the past few nights, because I really suck at cooking.
Etsy Creating: 1:30-4:00 PM
After lunch I set up shop at my kitchen table with a drink, fabric, my sewing kit, and a 30-year-old sewing machine. I have an Etsy shop where I sell Mickey Ears that are pretty fun and totally different from what you can get in the parks. I like to be ahead on those too. Life is just easier when your on top of things, just in case life gets in the way, or random Disney trips come up. So I tend to make anywhere from 3-5 sets of ears every few days, just so my turnaround time is quick and I don't have to be at my sewing machine every day when orders come in. (Go check out my Etsy shop if you're looking for something fun to wear to Disney!)
Ellen: 4:00-5:00 PM
Yeah, I watch The Ellen Show everyday. That is one hour of just chill time during a pretty busy day
Dinner: 5:00-6:30 PM
While I can't really cook, I'm pretty good at the prep. So I get things ready to cook, like the vegetables and whatnot, and my mom cooks. So in this hour and a half, there's prep, cook, and eating time.
Watch the News: 6:30-7:00 PM
I'm such an old lady. I don't tend to watch a lot of TV, but like Ellen, I make a point to watch the Nightly News with Lester Holt. I like to stay up to date with what's going on in the world.
Random Whatever Time: 7:00-10:00 PM
So this chunk of time is usually not very structured. Depending on the day, there might be something else on TV I like (NCIS/Survivor/Madame Secretary). I take a shower. I check Etsy one more time for orders I might have missed so they can go out tomorrow. I chill out. Sometimes I get a snack.
Check Emails and Social Media: 10:00-10:30 PM
I tend to go to bed pretty early for someone in their twenties. The last thing I do before I go to bed is check my emails, Facebook, Buzzfeed, and a few other things on my computer.
Bed and Social Media: 10:30-10:45 PM
I climb into bed around 10:30 every night. I check both of my Instagram accounts and Twitter one more time for the day. Then it's off to sleep!
So that's my typical day as someone who works from home! Let me know in the comments if it's what you thought it was going to be like, or if you thought it was just hanging out on the couch watching Star Wars all day.
