Walt Disney World Wednesday: Review of Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party
"It's really not so scary." The infamous line from Mickey's Boo to You Parade is constantly going through my head this time of year. Probably because I love the Boo to You Parade, and partly because I love Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party! From delicious party specific treats, to incredible entertainment, and awesome character meets, the party really has something for everyone! So since I was able to go to the party this past weekend, I want to give you my best tips for Mickey's Not So Scary so you have the best experience possible!
1. Dress up!
This is one of the only times that adults are allowed to dress up in costumes to go to Magic Kingdom. And let me just tell you, that when I say people go all out, they really go all out. Sometimes it's hard to figure out if someone didn't just come out of Disney's costuming department and walk into the party! But then there's other people who are more subtle with their costume and will have more of an "inspired by" look. That's where I fall. This year I went as Captain Phasma from Star Wars. Partly because I knew I was going to be making this costume for my next runDisney race in November, and partly because Captain Phasma is fab. Even if you just wear a tutu and a festive t-shirt, you'll definitely be in the party spirit more if you dress up.
2. Rides or Party Entertainment?
Here's my thing when people say they spent MNSSHP or Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party riding rides: Why would you do something you can do any time you're at Magic Kingdom when there's things you can only do at a party being offered?! These things include special parades, fireworks, shows, and characters (more on them later). If you get to the party at 4:00 when your party ticket allows, I get doing a few rides before the party actually starts, but during the party? No thanks. You can find me lining the streets of Frontierland waiting for the Headless Horseman, Mickey's Boo To You Parade, or in front of Cinderella Castle waiting for HalloWishes or the Hocus Pocus Villains Spelltacular! These are some of the best events that Disney has to offer, and there's a reason people will wait over an hour to have the best spot possible! My one tip for the parade is watch the first one. While the second parade might be less crowded, the weather in Florida is weird, and many nights of MNSSHP the second parade hasn't gone off because of weather. The first parade is at 8:30 pm.
I love meeting characters, especially characters I don't get to see very often, if ever, if I'm not at a party. Some really popular characters at MNSSHP are Jack and Sally from Nightmare Before Christmas, and the Seven Dwarves from Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. Both sets of characters will have fairly long lines all night, so if you want a quick wait, get in line right at 4:00 pm when the party starts, as both sets of characters come out to meet a little bit before the party starts. Two of my other favorite characters also meet during the party- Cruella De Vil, and Tarzan, Jane, and Terk! Cruella can be found by the Storybook Circus exit for the Walt Disney World Railroad. Let me just tell you, Cruella is one of the best character experiences I've had in a long time. She was so funny, witty, and extra fabulous with her fur coat!
Tarzan, Jane and Terk can all be found just over the bridge into Adventureland, and they are all so cute! It's so fun to meet all three of them together, and see how they not only interact with guests, but with each other.
4. Other Thoughts
If you're going to the party, I would not go to a park in the morning. Parties last until midnight, and if you do a park in the morning it can be really tiring, especially in the Florida sun that's still set to 90 degrees. What I like to do is spend a few hours in the morning at Disney Springs, do a little shopping and get lunch, then go back to my resort. Sometimes I'll take a nap, and other times I'll chill by the pool, but nothing too taxing because there's a party to go to!
I would also try to make a plan of attack before you get to the party. If you know you want to meet Jack and Sally, be sure you know where they meet (it's in the gazebo behind the Christmas Store in Liberty Square where Tiana and Naveen used to meet!). If you're interested in getting party specific merchandise be sure you know where to go for that item. Not every store has the same items. Pins can only be found in Big Top Souvenirs in Storybook Circus, and while t-shirts are on Main Street inside the Emporium. All of this information is on the back of the park map!
Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party is so much fun, but it can be overwhelming without a little planning. Let me know what you love about parties at Walt Disney World in the comments, and like this post if you'v been singing Boo To You since August like I have.
